DASHING DAN UP FOR 2021

BRITISH Youth Champion Dan Thompson can’t wait to get his first taste of Championship action next year.

Thompson, who pipped twin brother Joe to the title, has been handed a place in the Watling JCB Lions side and will double-up with the Roger Webster Lion Cubs at National League level.

Despite the cancellation of league racing in the UK this year, he still enjoyed plenty of meetings throughout the country.

He said: “The main focus for me now is to continue riding for the Cubs next year and take my Championship chance with both hands.

“Hopefully I can do individual meetings and any other opportunities we’re given. It is just about riding as much as you can.

“We’re all still talking in the group chats between the two teams and everyone is raring to go for next year!”

Reflecting on 2020, Thompson is satisfied with the progress he made.

He said: “I felt personally it was a good season for me from participating in the Youth Championship, the Under-19 and Under-21 stuff as well as doing a challenge fixture for Leicester.

“This year we were given so much help mechanically off the track from our mechanics Richard Maull and Mick Sheppard. And then we have been doing a few GB Speedway Academy fitness camps as well as training at home to keep ourselves sharp for when we get back racing again.

“It has been massive for me having the use of our own track at home.

“I’ve been riding every single day even if I wasn’t on a speedway bike, it was just bike time with throttle control which has really helped me this year and I don’t think I would have progressed as much if I didn’t have that facility.

“I managed to achieve some of my personal goals despite some of the meetings being unavailable to us but overall it was a good season.”
